Anand, Humpy Top Indian Ratings

Former five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand and Koneru Humpy topped the Indian July 2017 ratings with 2783 and 2557 Elo points. The July 2017 ratings were published by FIDE, the International Chess Federation on its site www.fide.com

In the World Top 10 rank, the slide of world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway has started. His second from last placing in the Norway tournament last month has brought him down to 2822. Now, only ten points below him is Vladimir Kramnik of Russia on 2812. Wesley So (USA) 2810, Norway champion Levon Aronian (Arm) is at 2809. Anand is ninth ranked at 2783 as the highest Asian naturally.

Hou Yifan of China tops the women’s list with 2666. She did not play in the World Team Championship at Khanty-Mansiysk. Russian women won it.

India has two players in the World top 10 women. Humpy was inactive while Harika lost rating in her eight games in the World Team Championship. The defeat of Harika to Wafa Shrook of Egypt took away more than nine Elo for Harika.

There are seven Indian players in the World top 100. And five women players are in the World top 100 women as well.

With a huge contribution from women players, Russia is ahead of India in the number of players in the July 2017 rating list. They have 67408 while we have 65241. Indian list has GMs 45, IMs 92, WGMs 7 and WIMs 32. The AICF had taken stock of the low WGM count and are in the process of offering training for those who are close to achieving it. High rated WIMs like Aakanksha and R Vaishali can be expected to become WGMs soon.
