Anand finishes third

AICF Admin 13 years ago

Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand plaWorld champion Viswanathan Anand finished third in the Alekhine Memorial that started at Paris and concluded at St Petersburg on May 1, 2013.

Anand scored over Fressinet, Ding Liren and lost to Adams while drawing the rest of the players for a push performance as far as rating goes.

Gelfand of Israel gains the most rating for his 5.5/9 score as he shared the first place with Aronian of Armenia. Svidler, Kramnik and Ding Liren lose the most rating from this contest.

The world’s chess elite caravan now moves to Norway next for the strongest tournament of all-time starting May 8, 2013. Anand and Carlsen will also face each other for the last time before they play the World Title Match at Chennai in November 2013.

Alexander Alekhine (1892-1946) was the only player to die as world champion. He was also the first world champion to visit India in the 1930s when he took a trip to Asia with his family and spent a few days in Calcutta.

Final placings: 1-2. L Aronian (Arm), B Gelfand (Isr) 5.5/9 each; 3 V Anand (Ind) 5; 4-8. N Vitiugov (Rus), L Fressinet (Fra), V Kramnik (Rus), M Adams (Eng), M Vachier-Lagrave (Fra) 4.5 each; 9 Ding Liren (Chn) 3.5; 10 P Svidler (Rus) 3.
