Former world champion Viswanathan Anand struggled with his form in the first round of the FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss 2019 as he suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Grandmaster Evgeny Najer of Russia.

It was a highly tactical game in which Najer launched an impressive attack against Anand’s king which was successful since black was unable to find a difficult saving resource.
IM Raunak Sadhwani also caused an upset by beating GM Sanan Sjugirov of Azerbaijan.

In an India vs India clash on board 17,GM Vidit Gujrathi beat GM Sethuraman S.P with the white pieces while GM Adhiban B beat chinese player Wu Li in an impressive sacrificial game.
The only other loss for an Indian player came in the form of GM Prithu Gupta’s defeat against GM Vladimir Fedoseev of Russia.
All the remaining games by the Indian Players were drawn.
