5th National Schools Chess Championships 2016

Participants of 5th National Schools Chess Championships might have been fortunate to play the tournament in such a lively and lavishing venue, with all amenities and facilities. Both halls accommodating the entire 733 players looked more than like a ball room of 5 star hotel, with light emanating from modern and decorative chandeliers. The beautiful lawn with shamiana housed an equal number of waiting parents and the multi cuisine restaurant in the lawn provided a variety of north and south Indian dishes, besides international menu like pizza.
The break-up of the players in the Schools championships is as follows:

The championship attracted players from all the chess active states of India, including north eastern states like Assam and Tripura.Erigaisi Arjun of Telangana was the highest rated player, with a rating of 2238, who played in Under 13 category!. Many players like DivyaDeshmukh, a medal winner in the recent World Youth championship, Priyanka Nutaki, HarshitaGuddanti, who had donned Indian colours were some star attractions of the tournament.
Maharashtra won 5 gold medals, the most number in the tournament, followed by Tamil Nadu – 4, AP, Karnataka and Tripura one each.
The best school trophy was won by VelammalVidhyalaya of Tamil Nadu, followed by DAVP School, Bhubaneswar and Syna International School, Katni, MP. The medal tally is

The participants and parents had a surprise pleasure, when five times world champion Viswanathan Anand inaugurated the tournament. His inaugural speech was a very motivating one to the school boys and girls. On the final day, grandmaster Abhijit Kunte, Mr. Samir Chichghareof the sponsor SS International School and a host of others were the chief guests.
