Rahman leads, Shardul felicitated @ IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Junior Chess 2016 – By RR Vasudevan

Top seed Mohammad Fahad Rahman (4.0) lead the field after the fourth round of the IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Junior Chess Tournament 2016 held at Mount Litera School International, Bandra (East), Mumbai here today. Running Rahman close in the title race, is the talented Nagpur boy Sadhwani Raunak, who accounted for S Abhinessh in the second board. Both the favorites lead with 4.0 points, with several players behind.

Earlier, the newest Grandmaster Elect of India Shardul Gagare, who completed his GM title requirement in the IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Open, was felicitated in a grand manner. Offering a shawl and garland made of pearls, Mr Karan Bhagat, MD & CEO, IIFL Wealth Group in his felicitations, predicted great future for the young lion. He further added, “With this momentum I foresee India producing 100 Grandmasters by 2020”. Mr Ravindra Dongre, Treasurer, All India Chess Federation, was all praise for Shardul. Dongre said, “Shardul is the sixth Grandmaster from Maharashtra, his growth is steady and he is bound to go far.”

The game of the day award for the previous round went to B Sriram, for his brilliant victory against higher rated Sankalp Gupta. This nine round Swiss tournament has a total prize money of Rs 750000  with the winner getting richer by Rs 150000, the highest in the world for a Junior event.

IIFL Wealth Mumbai Junior Results (Round 3) (Indians unless specified) Mohammad Fahad Rahman (4) bt Aan Sikka (3), S Abhinessh (3) lost to Sadhwani Raunak (4), Rishi Gupta Ananya (3.5) bt Dev Shah (2.5), Rahat Rahul Mhatre (3) drew with Parekh Vrandesh (2.5), Sankalp Gupta (3) bt Shah Vrisha Parag (2) , Raahil Mullick (2.5) drew with Aditya Ramanathan (2.5), Bhavik Ahuja (2.5) drew with Nanditha V (2.5), Nimdia Ridit (3) bt Arya Ranjan (2)
