By Arvind Aaron

FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and his team was re-elected for another term in FIDE in the elections that took place at Tromso, Norway.

In the last FIDE elections Anatoly Karpov lost and this time it was his successor Garry Kasparov who came up with a team and lost.

In a noteworthy move, Ilyumzhinov invited Kasparov to work for the betterment of chess after winning the elections.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has been the President of FIDE since 1996 when Florencio Campomanes invited him to take over FIDE which was in big financial trouble.

He bailed out FIDE and brought World Championship Knock Out with a $5 million prize fund at Groningen 1997. Although some of his plans failed he tried to unify the divided chess world and solved most of the problems faced by FIDE.

In the Asian Elections Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan was re-elected President of the Asian Chess Federation. His entire panel won :

a) Nomination of the Presidential Ticket of Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahayan were:
Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahayan (UAE) – President
Bharat Singh (IND) – Deputy President
Tian Hongwei (CHN) – Vice President
Hisham Ali Al Taher (UAE) – General Secretary
Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh (IRI) – Treasurer
