India bags 24 medals in Commonwealth Chess Championship 2024 Melaka , Malaysia

Open Section

India won 9 Gold, 9 Silver and 6 Bronze in Commonwealth Chess

Mitrabha Guha triumphs the Open section.

GM Mitrabha Guha won the all-important final round 7.5/9 against IM Rohith Krishna. 7/9 The game had started with an English Opening and the position was complicated where in Mitrabha navigated the complication much better. Rohith had a wonderful tournament despite his final round loss and this augurs well for this talented youngster. GM Deepan Chakkravarthy 7/9 won the bronze medal after inflicting a painful defeat against GM Lalith Babu.

Under 18 Open and Girls

Top seed IM S Aswath won his final round to score a dominating 8.5/9 finishing 2 point ahead of the silver medallist.

  In the girls sections Koh,Wei le Gladys of Singapore and S Kanishka tied for 1st with 7/9 rounds but the tie breaks favoured the Singaporean and S Kanishka had to settle for the silver medal.

Under 16 Open and Girls

The Open Section witnessed exciting fights on the top boards and finally Siva Kumar Nirish Kumar of Malaysia and Velavaa Ragavesh tied for 1st with 7/9 rounds and the tie breaks favoured the local hero Nirish Kumar.Velavaa had to settle for the silver medal.

In the Girls section, Sneha Halder and Yashvi Jain won their respective games to finish 1 and 2nd respectively. Sneha scored 8/9 and Yashvi scored 7/9 thereby showing Indias dominance in this category.

Under 14 Open and Girls

Jval Saurin Patel won his final round game to make a dominating 8.5/9 to win the tournament.V Raghav and Vignesh Kannan won the silver and the bronze respectively.

Likewise in the girls section the tournament was swept by the Indians occupying the top 2 positions. Prishita Gupta won her final round game against Naidoo Dhiya to score 6.5/9 to claim the gold medal.She was joined by fellow Indian Saparya Ghosh  who won her final round game to tie on 6.5/9.She eventually had to settle for the silver due to her inferior tie break.

Under 12 Open and Girls

  Aaradhya Suyog Bagul and Wijerathna Vinuka Dihain from Sri Lanka won the gold and silver respectively.Both scored 7.5/9.Ayaan Garg from India took the bronze medal scoring 6.5/9.

In the girls’ section,the Indian swept the medals with Pratitee Bordoloi winning her final round game and won the tournament with a score of 7.5/9.The silver and the bronze medal was won by Aadya Gowda and Aadya Ranganath,both scored 7/9.

                                              

Under 10 Open and Girls

Rahul Ramakrishnan did not slow down and won his 9th consecutive game against compatriot Aarait Kapil.Rahul scored a perfect 9 to win the gold medal.The silver was won be fellow Indian Muhammad Shayan Noushad Ibrahim 7/9.

In the girls’ section, A.S Sharvaanica drew her 9th round game to win the gold medal.She scored 8/9.Samhita Pungavanam won the bronze medal with a score of 7/9.

Under 8 Open and Girls

Mani Sarbharto like Rahul won his final round game to make it a perfect 9/9.Hriday Garg won his final round game to score 7/9 and clinch the silver medal.

In the girls’ section, the Srilankans completely dominated by winning the top 3 medals.Indian Rayna Ajay Patel finished 5th by scoring 5 points.
