P V Nandhidhaa is the National Women Champion 2024

AICF Admin 10 months ago

The 50th National Women’s Chess Championship concluded today at Chettinadu Public School with a thrilling finale. WGM P. V. Nandhidhaa of Tamil Nadu claimed her maiden National Championship title by outplaying Priyanka Nutakki of Andhra Pradesh on the top board in a Sicilian Rossolimo Defense. Nutakki’s critical 9th move, a king retreat, left her vulnerable, and Nandhidhaa skillfully exploited the resulting weaknesses around Nutakki’s king, pressing for a decisive victory. Nandhidhaa finished the tournament with an impressive 9 points.

In another key game, IM Padmini Rout’s aggressive opening strategy against Saranya in a Modern Defense proved successful. Saranya lost a pawn on the 20th move, and Padmini skillfully transitioned into a favorable endgame, concluding the match in 39 moves and advancing to 8.5 points.

K. Priyanka of Tamil Nadu triumphed over Nisha Mohota, while Kiran Manisha of LIC defeated Keerti Shree Reddy. Both Priyanka and Kiran joined Padmini with 8.5 points each. K. Priyanka secured second place overall, and Padmini Rout took third.

In another tightly contested game, Mary Ann Gomes of PSPB drew against Varshini after her advantage gradually dissipated during a long series of exchanges. The game ended in a draw after 61 moves.

The prize distribution ceremony was attended by IAS Ayush Venkat Vats, Sub-Collector of Devakottai, who praised India’s recent double medal-winning performance at the Chess Olympiad and expressed hope for the continued development of chess talents through such tournaments. Stephen Balasamy, General Secretary of TNSCA, S. P. Kumaresan, Chairman of Chettinadu Public School, and K. Arunkumar, Vice Chairman, were also present, with Kumaresan emphasizing that this tournament would remain a memorable event for the participants
