India shock Russia 2.5-1.5

Second seed India shocked top seed Russia 2.5-1.5 in the sixth round of the World Youth Chess Olympiad on July 25, 2013.

This event runs from July 22-29 at Chongqing, China. The tournament director is Ye Jiangchuan and the chief arbiter is Ignatius Leong.

In the seventh round, India takes on third seed Hungary. Three rounds remain to be played in this 72-team nine round Swiss team event played on four boards.

Diptayan Ghosh of Kolkata helped India defeat Russia when he beat Kirill Alekseenko on the third board.

On the top two boards, Shardul Gagare and Karthikeyan Murali held higher rated opponents to draws. Sayantan Das played a draw on the fourth board to seal India the match.

Diptayan Ghosh has scored 5.5/6 and his performance is pulling the Indians up.

In the fifth round, India were held to a 2-2 draw by Turkey after Shardul Gagare suffered a shock defeat on the top board.

India had won the first four matches. Indians are leading with 11 points after five wins and a draw. In the second place are Hungary, China-2, Iran and Russia on 10 points.

India, many time winner of this event would be favourites to win after this crucial victory against top seed Russia.
