Asian Junior – Double delight for India; Raahul and Savitha champions

V S Raahul in the open section and Savitha Shri B in Girls won the Asian Junior Chess Championship at Colombo on Thursday.

Tamilnadu teenager Raahul scored 7.5 out of possible 9 to finish ahead of compatriots Mitrabha Guha and GB Harshvardhan, who took first runner-up and second runner-up positions respectively to make it an all Indian podium finish. 2019 edition silver medalist K Raghunandan finished at fourth.

Meanwhile in the girls category, Savitha drew her ninth round game against her Sri Lankan opponent Chaindi Attanayake to finish the event on top with seven points. During the process, Savitha achieved her maiden Woman Grandmaster norm also. India’s K Priyanka K took the second place ahead of Iran’s Anousha Mahadian on tie break after both players tied for the runner up position with 6.5 points.
