A brief report on BRICS games Rapid Chess Championships 2024 Kazan, Russia.

  The BRICS games Rapid Chess Championships for Men and Women were held at the Bashir Rameev IT Park or Bashir Rameev Technopark, Kazan, on 18th June, 2024. Both the tournaments were held in Swiss-League Format with nine rounds in each leg.

  The Men’s tournament saw 24 entries from 14 countries. Grandmaster Vladislav Artemiev of Russia won the Gold Medal with 7.5 points. International Master Tsaruk Maksim, representing International Chess Federation FIDE and Grandmaster Bai Jinshi of China also finished with 7.5 points each, bagging Silver and Bronze Medals respectively.

 Indian representatives International Master Aronyak Ghosh (4.5 points) and Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna (4 points) were placed 13th and 16th respectively.

In the Women’s section, 20 players from 13 Federations took part. Grandmaster Kateryna Lagno of Russia won the Gold Medal with a tally of 7.5 points. Woman Grandmaster Yuxin Song of China and Valentina Gunina representing International Chess Federation FIDE scored 6.5 points each but the Silver Medal went to the Chinese on superior tiebreak.

 Woman Grandmaster Mary Ann Gomes of India (5.5 points) played on the top board against Lagno in the last round and was placed 6th in the merit list after the last round loss. Woman Grandmaster Padmini Rout scored 5 points and was placed 10th.

A brief report on BRICS games Blitz Chess Championships 2024 Kazan, Russia.

 The BRICS games Blitz Chess Championships for Men and Women were held at the Bashir Rameev IT Park or Bashir Rameev Technopark, Kazan, on 19th June, 2024. Both the tournaments were held in Swiss-League Format with 11 rounds in each leg.

  The Men’s tournament saw 30 entries from 15 countries. Grandmaster Andrey Esipenko of Russia won the Gold Medal with 9 points. Grandmaster Vladislav Artemiev of Russia & International Master Tsaruk Maksim, also of Russia, representing International Chess Federation FIDE bagged Silver and Bronze Medals with 8.5 & 7.5 points respectively. 20 year old Aronyak Ghosh of India also scored 7.5 points but was placed 4th on tiebreak. Another representative of India, Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna defeated the winner Esipenko and first Runner-up Artemiev in the early rounds but lost the thread eventually and  was placed 8th with a tally of 6.5 points.

  In the Women’s section, 25 players from 14 Federations took part. Grandmaster Kateryna Lagno of Russia won the Gold Medal with a tally of 10.5 points. Woman Grandmasters Yuxin Song and Guo Qi of China bagged the Silver & Bronze Medals with a score of 9 & 8.5 points respectively. Indian Woman Grandmasters Mary Ann Gomes & Padmini Rout, who scored 7 & 6.5 points respectively, finished 6th & 7th.

A brief report on BRICS Games Rapid Chess Team      Championship 2024, Kazan, Russia.                               

  The BRICS games Rapid Chess Team Championship was held at the Bashir Rameev IT Park or Bashir Rameev Technopark, Kazan, on 20th June, 2024. The tournament was held in Swiss-League Format with nine rounds. The Indian Team, comprising Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna, International Master Aronyak Ghosh, Woman Grandmaster Padmini Rout & Woman Grandmaster Mary Ann Gomes was seeded 3rd, behind Russia and China. In the Coaches’ & Captains’ meeting held on 17th June, the organisers had announced that the merit criterion would be ‘Game points’ but a day before the event, the organisers changed it to ‘Match points’.

  The  tournament saw entries from 16 countries. The Russian team won the Gold Medal with a tally of 17 Match Points. China scored 16 Match points to bag the Silver Medal. 4th seed Uzbekistan clinched the Bronze Medal with a tally of 14 Match points. Indian team finished 4th with 13 Match points.

  On Board 1 and Board 2, Vishnu Prasanna and Aronyak Ghosh scored 6 points each from 9 games. On Board 3, Padmini Rout scored 8 points to remain unbeaten, drawing only against the Russian & Chinese players & defeating all the remaining 7 opponents. On Board 4, Mary Ann Gomes scored 7.5 points, losing only to the Russian, drawing against the Chinese and beating all the remaining 7 opponents. Though the Indian team scored 3 ‘Game points’ more than Uzbekistan, the criterion of ‘Match points’ eluded them the Bronze Medal.

The BRICS games Blitz Chess Team Championship was held at the Bashir Rameev IT Park or Bashir Rameev Technopark, Kazan, on 21th June, 2024. The tournament was held in Swiss-League Format with 11 rounds. The Indian Team, comprising Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna, International Master Aronyak Ghosh, Woman Grandmaster Padmini Rout & Woman Grandmaster Mary Ann Gomes was seeded 3rd, behind Russia and China.

The  tournament saw entries from 16 countries. The Russian team won the Gold Medal with a tally of 21 ‘Match Points’. China scored 20 ‘Match Points’ to bag the Silver Medal. 4th seed Uzbekistan clinched the Bronze Medal with a tally of 18 ‘Match Points’. Indian team finished 4th with 16 ‘Match Points’.               On Board 1, Vishnu Prasanna scored 8.5  points from 11 games. On the 2nd Board, Aronyak Ghosh earned 8 points from 10 games and got one walk-over. On Board 3, Padmini Rout also got one walk-over & scored 6.5 points from 10 games. On Board 4, Mary Ann Gomes scored 4.5 points from 10 games and got one walk-over. The Indian team scored overall 30.5  ‘Game points’.
