FIDE Chess Trainer’s Seminar Gets Underway at Guwahati

A three-day FIDE Chess Trainer’s Seminar got underway at the Sports Authority of India Regional Centre at Guwahati today. The camp has been organized by All India Chess Federation, supported by Sports Authority of India and Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India and hosted by All Assam Chess Association.

Forty-two participants from eight Northeastern states and Andaman Nicobar are participating in this event. It is completely free for the selected participants. This seminar is being taken place for the first time in Northeast in an effort to promote chess in the region.

The seminar is being conducted by renowned Grandmaster and Chess Author Jacob Aagaard of Scotland, Grandmaster R.B Ramesh, International Master Vishal Sareen and International Master Lanka Ravi. Earlier the event was inaugurated by Bharat Singh Chauhan, Secretary, All India Chess Federation in the presence of Subhash Basumatary, Director, SAI Regional Centre Guwahati, Biju Singha, Joint Secretary, All India Chess Federation and host of other dignitaries, officials, players, and guests.

“Four eminent trainers cannot give a lecture at the same time, so we decided to make the best use of the resources and also simultaneously held a coaching camp for students and Q&A sessions for the parents.”, commented Bharat Singh Chauhan, Hon’ble Secretary, AICF.

“Thankful to AICF and Sports Authority of India for organizing such an event in Northeast, hopefully, this is a beginning and NE gets its due attention and recognition in Chess in the form of more training camps, quality tournaments among other things. The kids are very enthusiastic to learn and if regular training is given they will make our nation proud with their achievements,” said FIDE Senior Trainer & Grandmaster Ramesh RB

Also, a special coaching camp for a group of 60 promising children below the age of 15 years is being held simultaneous to hone the skills of the upcoming talents. It is worth mentioning that the players of the northeast region, particularly the young kids of Assam like Shahil Dey (Under 7 & Under 9 National Champion and Asian Youth Under 8 Silver Medalist), Mrinmoy Rajkhowa (National Under 7 bronze Medalist) has been showing exceptional results in the National and International level of late and this kind of seminar and camp will go a long way in nourishing such talents and hopefully produce an International Master or Grandmaster from the region in the next few years.

“It’s a great initiative and a massive opportunity for all involved. I guess as trainers we stand to learn as much as the trainees here… the icing on the cake is the children’s camp that runs simultaneously, loved the kids and their enthusiasm,” said FIDE Senior Trainer & International Master Vishal Sareen.
