4th Johor International Chess Open 2017

The fourth edition of Johor International Chess Open took place between 11th to 16tth at Johor, Malaysia this month. Fifteen Indians marked their presence. GM Grigoryan Karen H. (2571) of Armenia was the top-seed of the event.

Starting the tournament as a 5th seeded player, GM Venkatesh M.R was clear with his objectives,” My Liffre Open victory in France during October 2017 has increased my level of confidence. Hence, at the back of my mind, I felt I had chances to win the Johor open, but I was more concerned about increasing my Elo rating. Finally, I was happy that I could achieve both of them.”

He achieved an unbeatable streak by scoring 7.5/9 points. Two games remain among his favorites,”Sixth-round game against IM Li Bo of China and of course, the last round game against IM Ratnakaran!” said the Chennai-based Grandmaster.

This performance secured him first place finish consisting of Winners Trophy + 8000 Malaysian Ringgit. But celebrations had to wait. “I did not have time to celebrate my victory because I had to leave for PSPB tournament the next day, but anyway I feel its just the beginning I need to work a lot on my chess and of course I would love to continue my winning streak!”
