Top-seeded Grandmaster Kravtsiv Martyn (Ukraine) and International Master Karthik Venkataraman (India) shared the lead with 7.0 points after the eighth round of the KIIT Chess Festival International Open 2018 “A” category at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar here today. Kravtsiv, playing with white pieces, stunned GM Rozum Ivan (Russia) in a Caro Kann game that lasted 26 moves.
Sharing the lead with Kravtsiv Martyn at 7.0 points was International Master Karthik Venkataraman (India) who accounted for Grandmaster Tukhaev Adam (Ukraine) in the third board.
Half a point behind the leaders at 6.5 points were six players viz., GMs Tran Tuan Minh (Vietnam), Amonatov Farrukh (Tajikistan), Mozharov Mikhail, Deviatkin Andrei (both Russia), Debashis Das and Diptayan Ghosh (both India) respectively.
This 293 player ten round Swiss tournament carrying a prize money of Rupees Twelve lakhs concludes on Friday, 1st June 2018.
