32nd National Under 9 Open and Girls 2018, Ranchi

Report by IA Paul Arokia Raj

The ongoing 32nd National under 9 open and girls chess championship at Ranchi has picked up a momentum after the sole leaders emerged in both sections. Illamprathi and Indira Priyadarshini Subbu (both Tamil Nadu) are the players leading the race with 6 points each in the open and girls section respectively at the end of the sixth round.

Abhyuday Santhosh

While four others namely Maya Chakraborthy (Assam), G.Akash (Tamil Nadu), Abhyuday Santhosh (Karnataka) and Bharadia Yash (Rajastan) are chasing the leader with 5.5 points each. In the girls section close on the heels of the sole leader is Sanikommu Manasvi (Karnataka) with 5.5 points.

Illamprathi who tied for first place in the recently concluded under 11 national open championship, continued his dream run in the sixth round by showing his expertise in Sicilian dragon variation. He punished Prinash Das for inappropriate handling of yugoslov attack by rolling down his pawns menacingly towards white’s king. Finding no respite for his King, White was forced to resign on his 29th move. In long drawn battle involving French defense G.Akash (Tamil Nadu) with black pieces checkmated his opponent Tanish Sai Kavuru (Andhra Pradesh) in 59 moves.

Unheralded Indira Priyadarshini Subbu is unstoppable.
